I bought my first Golden in 1984 and I've been hooked ever since. Goldie was beautiful, sweet and such a clown. I loved her and took her everywhere with me. Unfortunately, when I bought Goldie I didn't know the importance of genetics and a sound breeding program. Goldie was purchased from an auction fundraiser for a childrens charity. Her parents had no clearances and she was bred by someone who either didn't care or didn't understand the importance of genetic screening and the AKC standards of what a Golden should be. In 5 years I spent a very large amount of money treating ruptured ear drums and infections caused by ear mites (she had these when I purchased her), hip dysplasia and finally liver disease. I was devistaded emotionally and financially. Not only did I lose my best friend, but much of her suffering could have been avoided if she had been bred responsibly.
My love and dedication to the Golden Retriever breed did not end with my first Golden. Since then I have become resolved to only breed when I can do so responsibly. I breed to achieve perfect conformation for the show ring, to improve the genetic health of the breed, and to maintain the wonderful personality, temperment and athletic abilities of the perfect breed. |
